Style: Informal Decorative
Height: 3.5–4’
Bloom Size: 5-6”
Bloom Period: Late summer through first frost
Spacing: 12-18”
Planting time: After last frost, when soil temperature has reached 60°F. Store tuber in a cool, dry, dark place until ready to plant.
Planting instructions: Choose a well-drained, sunny spot. Loosen soil beneath the planting site about 1’ deep. Place the top of the tuber no more than 1-2” beneath the soil surface. Water in well and DO NOT WATER AGAIN UNTIL SPROUTS EMERGE to prevent rot. Plants will benefit from the addition of compost and an all-purpose fertilizer blend to the planting hole.
Growing instructions: Pinching after 3 to 4 sets of leaves have developed will lead to more blooms but will delay blooming for several weeks. Stake tall plants to prevent breakage and keep stems straight. Removal of spent blooms will encourage continued flowering.
Overwintering: Allow plants to continue growing until last frost. After last frost, stems and flowers will die back and the tuber will begin hardening off for winter. If possible, allow hardening off for 1-2 weeks for before lifting. Do not allow tubers to freeze. Shake off excess soil and allow to dry for 24-48 hours out of direct sunlight. Store tubers at 40-50°F in a lightly moistened media such as vermiculite. Check frequently over winter to insure an absence of rot. Add moisture with a light misting if the tubers appear dry or shriveled.
